      Lots of people tune into Monday Night Football. This past Monday I checked it out and was surprised to see Frank Gifford making the opening remarks. He was part of the team that handled those chores in the early days of Monday Night Football with Howard Cosell and Don Meredith.

Forestry Workers Laid Off
      To the editor: Unfortunately, with the state budget as it stands, the Bureau of Forestry put wage employees on leave without pay two months early - Sept. 11, instead of the usual time in late November. A return date for approximately 150 employees statewide is unclear. Managers are hopeful that budgetary issues will be resolved before spring fire season.

Cameron County Disaster Plan Update
      To the editor: Cameron County will soon begin updating its Local Hazard Mitigation Plan. This will be the blueprint for reducing property damage and saving lives from the effects of natural and man-made disasters. The update is required in order for Cameron County to be eligible for certain types of state and federal disaster relief funds.
