      An Oct. 3 headline and caption indicating that the Emporium office of Dickinson Mental Health is closing were incorrect. As detailed in the story, Outpatient Services will no longer be available at the office; however, a number of other services will continue to be offered there.

      Angeline Ruth Davis and Keith Michael Halstead were united in a double ring ceremony on Aug. 22, 2009 at the Abundant Life Church, with Reverend John Miller officiating. Sara and “A” Maines performed vocal music selections. The bride is the daughter of Mary and Jeff Davis of Coudersport. The groom is the son of Deb and Kevin Halstead of Duke Center.

Memory Walk raises $7K for Alzheimer fight
      A small but dedicated group gathered at Strawberry Field for the annual Memory Walk to raise money to fight Alzheimer’s disease. While the skies were cloudy, with drizzle during most of the event, participants remained committed to making the three-mile walk. Their efforts raised $7,000 for support services and research.

Autism awareness walk Oct. 24
      A Cameron County High School senior is organizing the second annual Walk for Autism Awareness, to be held on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 am to 1 pm at the high school track. Denise Dillon is inviting area businesses to set up booths at the track for a $15 fee. Walkers are being encouraged to line up sponsors. The first 25 participants will receive a free T-shirt.

      1,528 Some gigantic pumpkins have been grown across the region this year, but all of them dwarf in comparison to this monster. An Oregon man grew the heaviest pumpkin on record last year with a specimen tipping the scales at 1,528 pounds.

Austin school upgrading technology curriculum
      Austin Area School District is upgrading its technology curriculum to better prepare students for a changing job market. Superintendent Dr. Matthew Hutcheson reported at this month’s school board meeting that the project continues. Information has been provided to all faculty members and updates will be made in the coming weeks.

New dentist arrives
      Dr. Gene Yount has arrived at the Cameron County Dental Center, with office hours of 8 am to 5 pm on Tuesdays and 8 am to noon. He offers dental services to adults and children and accepts all insurances. Services include dental surgery, fillings, cleanings and general dentistry procedures.

Sled dog races returning; open to public
      Sled dog racing returns to Sinnemahoning State Park in Cameron and Potter counties with a festival-like atmosphere on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 The fourth annual Canadian-American Sledders Dry-Land Event and related activities get underway Saturday at 9 am and are open to the public.

Austin Borough agrees to buy new truck
      Members of the Austin Borough Council last Monday agreed to buy a new truck for the maintenance department. The truck, a Ford Super Duty fully-equipped with plow and cinder spreader, is a 2004 with 30,000 miles that Wharton Township had owned. That municipality had planned to trade it on a new truck, but instead sold it outright to Austin Borough for $15,500.

      Next LICC meeting will be at the Cameron County Recreation Center in Emporium on Monday at 10 am. LICC provides opportunity for parents, agencies, and professionals to work together to deliver of early intervention services to infants, toddler, and preschool children with special needs in Cameron and Elk counties.

Gun thief, urinating woman among those who kept police busy
      Stolen handgun Theft of a handgun from a pickup truck remains under investigation by state police from Denton Hill. The victim, Jessica Watson of Austin, told police the Ruger .45 caliber weapon was taken sometime between Sept. 24 and Oct. 11. During that period, the vehicle was in western New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
