      It’s almost here and, across the region, the outlook for deer hunters is good. A large number of mature bucks are out there, including a few real trophies. Some of the largest bucks killed in recent years will be taken this fall.

Preliminary bear hunt kill hits projections
      Results of the three-day bear hunting season are being assessed by the Game Commission. Early reports suggest that the agency’s forecast was accurate in terms of hunter success and population management. Monday’s opening-day kill was about 1,900, the Game Commission said, slightly higher than the 2008 opener (1,725) and in line with projections.

State forest road on Horton Run to reopen
      Pa. Bureau of Forestry officials report that Horton Run Road in Potter County, normally closed to vehicular traffic between 6 am and 5 pm daily, will be open all day on Monday for the opening day of deer hunting season.

Coyote hunt set Feb. 19-21
      Sinnemahoning Sportsmen’s Club has announced plans for its fifth annual Coyote Hunt. It will be held Feb. 19-21. Advance registration is required and will be held at the clubhouse on Jan. 9, 16, 23 and 30, as well as Feb. 1 and 13, from 9 am to 1 pm.
