John J. Blass
Former Potter County Commissioner John J. Blass of Galeton died Monday, Dec. 21, 2009. He was 74.
Mr. Blass was employed by PennDOT as an equipment operator and foreman for 25 years. He was previously employed by the WAG and the Pennsylvania Railroad.
He was a founding member of the Gale Hose Ambulance company and volunteered for many years as a Little League Baseball coach.
Among survivors are two daughters, Debra (John) Simonetti of Ulysses, and Sheila Blass of Sarasota, Fla.; two sons, Jeff (Trixie) Blass of Galeton and Daniel Blass of Mesa, Ariz., and sister Janice (Jim) Petersen of Renovo, as well as five grandchildren.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to Gale Hose Ambulance Company or Potter County Hospice.
Long-time area businessman Leroy Coppersmith, 94, of Emporium, died Saturday, Dec. 26, in his home.
Born Feb. 25, 1915 in Emporium, he was the son of Leroy Neal and Ophelia Anne Dodson Coppersmith. In 1938, he married Ruth Crum who died in 1956. He later married Lois E. Yentzer Baker, who survives.
A resident of Emporium most of his life, Mr. Coppersmith was a 1933 graduate of Emporium High School and attended the Wharton School of Finance at Drexel University in Philadelphia.
He was employed for several years by Sylvania Electric in Emporium as an accountant. He lived and worked in Coudersport, where his father had opened one of the Coppersmith Furniture Stores. In 1956, he returned to Emporium, where he worked and was co-owner of the Emporium store with his brothers, George, Neal, Frank and Jim Coppersmith, until retiring in 1978.
Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium, was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in Newton Cemetery, Emporium. Memorials may be made to the Friends of the Library, Cameron County Ambulance Service, or American Cancer Society.
Julian ‘Spid’ Patterson
Julian A. “Spid” Patterson, 85, of Coudersport, died Dec.27, 2009 at Hamot Medical Center in Erie.
Mr. Patterson was a graduate of Coudersport High School and a veteran of World War II, having served with the U. S. Army in Europe and in the Pacific. He was employed for almost 45 years as an auto mechanic in Coudersport.
Among survivors are his wife, the former Margaret Curtis; a son, Jeffrey Patterson and his wife, Sherri, of West Pittston, and two grandchildren.
Burial was in Eulalia Cemetery, Coudersport. Memorials may be made to Coudersport Public Library, 502 Park Avenue, Coudersport PA 16915. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fickinger Funeral Home, Coudersport.
Gerhard J. Gebauer
Former World War II prisoner of war Gerhard J. Gebauer, 87, of St. Marys, formerly of Emporium, died Dec. 24, 2009.
He was born Sept. 3, 1922, in Czechoslovakia. In 1958 at St. Mark Catholic Church, Emporium, he married Pauline Kassawara, who survives.
Mr. Gebauer immigrated to the U.S. from Germany after World War II, during which he was imprisoned in France. He became a U.S. citizen in 1956.
Burial was in the St. Mark Catholic Cemetery, Emporium. Barnett Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

World War II Army veteran Richard D. Earle, 87, of Austin, died Dec. 29, 2009 at his home.

Helen E. Hanchett
Helen E. Hanchett, 85, of Coudersport, died Dec. 29, 2009, at Sweden Valley Manor in Coudersport.

William L. Richardson
William Lee “Bill” Richardson Sr., 81, of Coudersport, died Dec. 29, 2009, at Sweden Valley Manor in Coudersport.
Mr. Richardson had lived in Coudersport for the past 24 years, coming to the area from Delaware County. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U. S. Marine Corps.

Hiroko K. Guilds
Hiroko K. Guilds, 80, of Ulysses, died Dec. 29, 2009, in Westfield. She was a native of Japan.

E. Burley Pease, 69, of Duke Center, formerly of Mills and Westfield, died Dec. 30, 2009.
