Seed sale will benefit community garden
     Local students are excited about the prospect of cultivating another Community Garden this summer. They’re getting a head start by conducting a seed sale. Seeds being sold include beans, beets, carrots, corn, cucumber, eggplant, lettuce, peppers, radishes, spinach, squash, zucchini, watermelon and dill. There are also seeds for flowers. Seed packets sell for 89 cents each.

      5 Rep. Greg Vitali has introduced House Bill 2235 to put a five-year moratorium on leasing additional state forest land for Marcellus Shale natural gas drilling. “Our state forests can’t be viewed as a cash cow,” Rep. Vitali said. “We shouldn’t lease another square inch until we fully evaluate the impact of drilling.”

Split verdict in DUI case
      An Elk County man was found guilty of driving under general impairment and summary traffic violations, and acquitted of the more serious charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, following a non-jury trial before Potter County Judge Stephen Minor. Stephen J. Atkeson, 42, of St. Marys will be sentenced on March 3.

      Plant closing tough blow CLARION – An Owens-Illinois glass plant in Clarion will be closed by July 1. The factory employs 420 people and has been in operation for more than 100 years. At this point, the company plans to continue operations at its Brockway plant.
