Through An Old Timer’s Eye s

BY HOWARD ‘MAC’ MCDONALD

President Obama delivered his State of the Union address last week and, even though I didn’t watch it, I know exactly how it went.

When he mentioned something the Democrats liked, they would applaud and jump up and down. On the other hand, the Republicans would sit on their hands and frown. The two Independents would look at each other, grin and say, “We didn’t have a thing to do with it.”

The war was hardly mentioned, not much on health care and a lot about the economy. I was taking out the trash at work and there was a box from Quill Supply that had a statement printed on the side that said, Economy Box. I took off the lid and looked inside. It was empty, and I thought, “Just like our economy.”

I feel like Maxine. She is the queen of the internet and her comment is that things are so tough that Motel 6 can’t leave the light on for you. Now that is tough.

The conservatives around this area are talking about having a tea party. Their only trouble is that they want the liberals to bring the tea.

There was not one tea party when the bodies started to pour into Dover Air Force Base and they didn’t squawk about the money that is being poured down that rat hole in the Middle East. I looked up the cost of the war, but I don’t have the knowledge of big numbers with so many zeroes and commas to spell it out in this column.

The only time there is a bipartisan effort in Washington is when the Democrats and the Republicans get together and hatch a new scheme to fleece the middle class. They all holler about the big spenders, but all the Congress is worried about is the bucks they can put in their pockets and the bacon they bring home for their own districts.

Let’s jog the memories as to who it was that started the big landslide more than eight years ago when we started this 100- Year War. I am not thrilled about this President, either, and now he is in real trouble because his performance is not what it should be. There are not a lot of As on his report card. Mr. President, you better wake up and fulfill some campaign promises.

The situation in Haiti is improving, but there is something I do not understand. On the news broadcasts, I see the orphans that are being brought into this country and they all seem to be adopted by white families. Why is that?

Aid has been rushed to those unfortunate people as soon as possible and they will have a terrible situation for many years to come. There are needs for aid all over this world and even in our own country.

A tiny tribe of Lakota Sioux Indians has been devastated by winter storms. They have one of the poorest communities in the U.S. and at this writing they are without power, heat or drinking water.

The $175,000 in their emergency fund is depleted and I am wondering if our government will give them any aid. I read about this situation in the Wall Sreet Journal, but I doubt that most of the people who subscribe will notice the article. They seem to be interested only in the financial news.

A cold streak that came our way sure had people bundled up. Our fireplace has been lit 24/7 for the past four days and I plan to keep it going.

There is nothing like a crackling fire to warm your soul and the house. Lots of dirt, but the comfort is worth it.

Toyota is having a problem with their cars right now. The people who brag about how much better the foreign cars are when compared to Chevy, Chrysler and Ford don’t have much to say right now.

I am not a fan of foreign automobiles and it is because we don’t get the tariff breaks in those countries that they get here. We kicked their butts in WWII all over the world because our equipment was better than theirs.

Keep warm and don’t burn your house down.
