Horace C. ‘Bud’ Pleak
Born Sept. 14, 1921, in Villisca, Iowa , he was the son of the late Robert and Mary Chapman Pleak. On June 28, 1947, in Coudersport, he married Mary Jane Holden, who died June 6, 2011.
Mr. Pleak attended Iowa State University. In 1942, he started work at Hygrade Sylvania Corporation and was employed for 39 years as an engineer and manager with Sylvania and later GTE and Philips in Emporium.
He is survived by two sons, Robert G. (Joanne) Pleak of Salinas, Calif., and Andrew Pleak of New York City; three daughters, Mary Ann Weber of Billings, Mont., E. Jane Pleak-Alquist of Statesboro, Ga., and George Ann Pleak of Emporium; three grandchildren, Jesse Weber of San Francisco, Calif., Daniel Weber and Kathleen (Betsy) Weber of Santa Barbara, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Pauline Lewis and George Ann Holden at Felt Manor, and four nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Elizabeth Peterson and Eleanor Bradley.
Bud was an active member of the Community Players in the early 1940s, the Sylvania Rifle Club, Sylvania’s Quarter Century Club, Toastmasters Club, National Rifle Assn., Emporium Men’s Club and was committeeman for Boy Scout Troop 51, now 551.
In looking back at his life, Bud wrote to his children, “All in all, it’s been a great life, with a wonderful wife and perhaps we even proved that a heathen and an angel can live together a long time!”
Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium, is in charge of arrangements. Interment will be in St. Mark Cemetery, Emporium.
