Kyle Bova returns to championships

Kyle Bova has succeeded in a mission he established for himself a full year ago – a return trip to the PIAA State Wrestling Championship Tournament in Hershey.

Bova, a junior, is competing at the Giant Center as the second-seeded 152-pound wrestler from the PIAA Northwest Region, which held its tournament last weekend in Sharon.

Carrying a 34-0 record, Bova notched two more wins before he met his counterpart, District 10 titlist Austin Matthews of Reynolds. Matthews seized the early momentum and rode out the third period for an 18-6 win.

Bova takes his 36-1 record up against senior Kyle Barnes of Hughesville in the opening round at Hershey. Pennsylvania Cable Network (Zito Media cable channel 22) is televising the final round of the state tournament on Saturday.

Senior Cody Bova came within a hair’s-breadth of a trip to Hershey. He lost in the 138-pound consolation finals, 2-1, when he was penalized with a controversial stall point.

Coudersport junior Forest Tuttle scored a win in the consolation round at 182 before he was eliminated by a decision.

Cameron County’s three regional qualifiers failed to advance to Hershey.

Sophomore Brandon Saline lost two decisions, 4-0 and 4-1. Senior Taylor Saline (170) was pinned twice. Sophomore Jack Karsten (285) was pinned in his opener and lost a 7-4 decision in the consolation round.
