Smith federal trial postponed until August
Heart problems have forced postponement of Cameron County resident Thomas E. Smith’s trial in Williamsport until Aug. 5.
U.S. District Judge Christopher Connor granted the postponement last week after Smith’s lawyer, federal public defender D. Toni Byrd, described a series of seven hospitalizations for her client due to a cardiac condition.
Smith, 59, is being held in the Clinton County Jail and is being referred to a cardiologist, Byrd said.
Prosecutors recently added to the charges against Smith, who is accused of taking a bank executive hostage at gunpoint last year in Emporium. He’s now charged with possessing a stolen firearm, in addition to taking a motor vehicle by force and violence and carrying a firearm during a crime of violence.
Last August, Smith, allegedly forced a local bank manager to accompany him to the bank. The victim escaped and called police, but Smith fled and eluded police for nearly a month.
