Pennsylvania Elk Expo next weekend

Large crowds are expected for this year’s Pennsylvania Elk Expo, coming up Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 19-20, at the Elk Country Visitors Center near Benezette.

It’s a family-themed festival designed to educate, entertain and encourage support of “elk tourism” and responsible management of the animal’s population.

There are now more than 1,000 elk in Pennsylvania, with the largest numbers centered in Elk County and southern Cameron County. The herd has been a boon for the hospitality industry and for the relatively small number of hunters who are lucky enough to have their entries selected in a drawing.

Expo highlights will include elk- and turkey-calling contests, live music, nature education exhibits, close to 100 vendor booths and more.

Keystone Elk Country Alliance and Pennsylvania Great Outdoors Visitors Bureau are co-sponsors. No pets or alcoholic beverages are permitted.

Trapping demonstrations, Pa. Game Commission black bear processing, a youth shooting sports exhibit, and an antler scoring and trap and transfer unit will be available on the grounds. Horse-drawn wagon rides will be offered during late afternoon and evening hours.

On-site parking is for handicapped only. Other vehicles will be directed to the Benezette Community Center, where shuttle service will be available. For more information, call 814-849-5197.
