Higher profile for annual 50K race

Cameron County has a unique “extreme sports” event that has established as a keeper that draws visitors and boosts the county’s profile. Plans are coming together for the fifth annual Sinnemahone 50K Race, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 21.

More than 50 competitors from as far away as Florida and Michigan have already registered. The 50-kilometer endurance foot race is the biggest draw, but racers can also opt for courses of 25 or 10 kilometers.

Things get underway at 7:30 am from South Broad Street in Emporium. Start times will be staggered by distance, beginning with participants in the 25k.

This year’s 50K event is sanctioned as the Pa. State Championship Race of the Roadrunners Club of America, giving it even more exposure.

During the competition, spectators can browse vendor booths and tables along Broad Street. Live country and rock music will be performed. Camping will be available at the Cameron County Fairgrounds.

The Sinnemahone 50K is expected to take approximately 10 hours to complete. Route includes Steam Mill Road, Mowray Trail, Chicago Springs, Wiley Trail, Bucktail Path, pipeline right-of-way along Ridge Road, McNuff Road, Ridge Road from the intersections of Stillhouse and Steam Mill roads, Chicago Springs, Barr Hollow and Rock Run.
