Cafeteria merger tabled

A proposal to outsource Cameron County School District’s food service through a partnership with the Austin Area School District is on hold.

Superintendent Dr. Keith Wolfe explained that the 2019-20 school year would be the earliest that logistical and contractual issues could be resolved in order to move forward with the proposal.

In 2015, Cameron County School Board members voted to withdraw $328,000 from investment accounts to offset losses that had piled up over several years for the operation of the school cafeteria.

However, only about half of that was needed to put the dining facility back in the black.

Federal standards require public schools to offer more fruits and vegetables and smaller entree portions, while lowering salt and sugar content. As a result, many school districts, including Austin and Cameron County, have seen a decline in participation and decreased revenues for their food service operations.
