Thirteen residents of the seven rental units at 448 East Allegany Avenue safely self-evacuated following the 10:20 alarm. John Whitcomb, Pa. State Police fire marshal, said his investigation determined that the blaze was touched off by discarded smoking materials on a rear second-story porch. Officials said the structure, owned by Olean, N.Y., resident Laura Hoffman-Williamson, is likely unsalvageable. Emporium firefighters were joined by volunteers from Austin, St. Marys, Port Allegany, Coudersport and Kersey. They brought the blaze under control at around 3 am Wednesday, but were summoned back to the scene four hours later when it rekindled in a section between an old shingle roof and a new metal roof built over it.
