School district hires curriculum director

Cameron County School Board members filled a new administrative position during their July public meeting as the start-up of classes for the 2018-19 school year draws closer.

By a unanimous vote, the board hired Bryan Shell as director of curriculum, instruction and assessment, at an annual starting salary of $70,000 plus benefits.

Dr. Keith Wolfe, superintendent of schools, said Shell will ensure that the district’s class content complies with state and federal regulations; assist with the administration of standardized tests; implement a system of regular departmental and grade-level meetings, and take responsibility for training and guest speakers.

While the director of curriculum position is a rarity in the region, Cameron County is unique in that the district has just one principal serving both the elementary and high schools.
