Students at Austin School were treated to a living history of recorded music last week with a visit by John Peet of Coudersport. John is an antiques and music buff who used part of his collection of music boxes, Edison cylinder players, wax records, and compact disks to bring to life the history of recorded music. He was accompanied by retired Austin Area School teacher Julia Kolat who read a piece about the history of music boxes. From Stephen Foster's "Dixie" played in multiple parts on a sophisticated 1880's music box, through a speech by President McKinley on wax cylinder recording, to the Surround Sound of a Bose speaker system, the students were immersed in the history of sound. Kindergarteners through sixth graders enjoyed the program in Art Metzger's science classroom.
