Samuel W. Long

JULY 16, 1936 - MARCH 6, 2009

Retired Coudersport Borough Public Works Director Samuel W. Long, 72, of Coudersport, died Friday (March 6, 2009) at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.

Born on July 16, 1936 in Galeton, he was the son of John and Mary Carney Long. On Nov. 3, 1973 in Coudersport, he married Donna M. Abbott, who survives.

Mr. Long was a graduate of Galeton High School. He had worked at the Coudersport Theatre years ago and was employed for many years with the Borough of Coudersport, retiring in 1999 as Director of Public Works. After his retirement, he served on the Coudersport Borough Council.

Mr. Long served with the U. S. Air Force in the late 1950s. He was very active with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts years ago and was a member of the Eulalia Cemetery Association.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Shelley (Bill) Butler of Wellsville, N.Y., and Lisa Stiffler of Ogdensburg; three sons, Rick (Tabatha) Long, Curt (Michelle) Long, and Jeff Long, all of Coudersport; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, June Schoonover of Harrisburg, and Julia (Don) DeLill of Sweden Valley; two brothers, Fred (Virginia) Long of Galeton and Arthur (Ellen) Long of Rochester, N.Y., and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Ervin Lehman; three brothers, John Long, Charles Long and Harry Long; and a sister, Mildred.

Friends were received at the Fickinger Funeral Home, Coudersport, and at the Coudersport Free Methodist Church, where funeral and committal services were held with Wes Olney officiating. Burial was in Eulalia Cemetery, Coudersport.
